Hello, everyone!

Y'all may have been wondering what happened to me, or maybe not, but I'm here to say that I (might) be back.

In the last (almost) two years, I've been focusing more and more on my undergraduate college experience. I've made more friends, while keeping in touch with old ones, I visited Europe (London, Venice, Porcia, Milan, and Paris), I've joined a bunch of academic fraternities, and held at least one office in each one, I've joined a sorority (something I never thought would happen), I've been a summer camp counselor (and will be one again this summer, though it's as a culinary counselor this time around), I've been a resident assistant in my university's dorms I've applied to graduate schools, and I'm just about to graduate. That's a lot to have down in the short amount of time that I've been away, but I really think that stepping away from the blog and focusing on myself.

However, now that I've done all of those things, I feel like it's about time to come back to my baby, my book blog. I think I'll have way more time than I had previously had, and will be able to focus on the quality of my writing, at least more than I had before.

While I'm coming back to the blog, I'm not sure that I will be reading YA and New Adult books all that much anymore. I may have closed the chapter on the part of my life that really enjoyed reading Young Adult books-- I like being able to feel like I am the character, and with YA characters being much younger than I am, it just feels kind of weird to read about their situations. But! I'm not dragging on other reviewers reading Young Adult, it just isn't right for me anymore.

So, there it is! I'm back, though I have no idea when I'll make my first book-related post, and I'll try not to leave for so long again.

Love and all things good,

Hey y'all! Today we have Linda Foster on the blog, to promote her book, Unnatural Souls! (clap clap)

Tell us one really cool, behind the scenes fact that happened with your books.

Carrie appeared to be trying to rename Unnatural Souls to Grace and even made a hashtag for it every time she posts about it. #TheStoryWeCallGrace

What is your favorite part of being a writer?

I get to write! What do you mean favorite part?!? People read stuff I wrote!

Linda, where in the world did the idea for this story come from because it is awesome!

A lot of daydreaming is where it came from! I've always loved paranormal and at a time where everyone was writing stories about angels, I decided I wanted one that focused more on demons. This story is a piece of the three-part backstory coming out this year for my book Soul Bound. Unnatural Souls is Grace's backstory, and really how my characters in Soul Bound get to be where they are.

Did you have to do a lot of research? Because I know some of the demon research can be... pleasant.

Ha ha ha. I did some research. Mostly I wanted to make some really bad demons, new ones that are crazy looking, Google images was my inspiration for a lot of it. As an avid paranormal fan I already had most of the ideas in my head for what I wanted my angels and demons to be like. I wanted them to break rules. I wanted not so nice angels and demons who just wanted to be forgiven, but still lash out with their anger problems.

And now, about the book:
Summary:

It's been almost a year since the night of the accident that should have killed Grace. Nearly a year since her brother, Ash, sold his soul to save her. She survived, but that wasn’t the end of their story.

Not even close.

In the months since, Grace’s life has turned upside down. She can move objects with her mind, teleport in a blink of an eye, see dead people … and that's just the tip of the crazy train.

And that would be fine, really … if she had any idea how to control it.

Instead, she’s stuck in a body that does things she doesn’t understand. And now, the contract her brother made for her life is drawing to a close. Which means he’s running out of time before the demon comes to collect his soul.

Unless Grace can find a way to save him.

When an angel named Michael shows up with answers and an offer to help her, she jumps at the chance—and agrees to help him with his own mission as the price.

Then she finds out that Michael is working with another demon. That the deal she’s made … is no better than the one from which she’s trying to save Ash. And she’s faced with a choice: turn and walk away, or try to save her brother—by working with the very monsters who have nearly destroyed them both.
About the Author:

Linda Foster was born and raised in Colorado, where she still lives with her (very patient) husband, two (very spoiled) ferrets and (equally spoiled) dog. Linda became an avid reading enthusiast the moment she picked up her first book, and has grown steadily worse. By the time she was fifteen years old, her library had become too big for her shelves, and she was forced to donate all her books to the local school, just to make room for new ones. She started writing short novellas for her friends in middle school, and expanded into full-length novels several years later.

The Realm of the Claimed novellas are her first published work.

Excerpt

Later, when the sweat on our skin turns cool and the floor turns hard, she murmurs, “Someone should write a book about how Alice Liddell from Wonderland falls in love with Huckleberry Finn. I might rather want to read that book.”

I bury my face in the curve of her neck. She smells so goddamn good right now. “What would it be called?”

She’s quiet for a long moment. I run my hands along her body, memorizing the planes the best I can. A sigh of contentment floats be- tween us, and I have no idea if it came from her or me.

I can’t remember being so happy.

“It would be a love story,” she finally says.

“That’s the title? A Love Story?”

“No, no. It would be called An Ode to Polaris.” And then, “Polaris is the name of the North Star.”

I kiss the hollow of her neck. “I know what Polaris is. We’re binaries, remember. Can’t it be An Ode to Binaries?”

“The point is, it would be a love story. And it would be my favorite.”

The breath in my chest stills. Is she—is she saying what I think she’s saying? I have to swallow before I can talk. I’m reminded of how my father looked at his wife when she was telling all the revelers at their anniversary ball of how he proposed to her. He looked at her like she was the most important thing in his world. Like she was the most precious. Like the sun rose and set on her.

As much as I loved them both, it was alien to me then. But I get it now. I absolutely get it.

When I answer her, my words will only come out as whispers, there’s so much emotion in me. “It would be my favorite, too.”

Summary:

Meet Hedi Peacock. She's half Fae. Half Were. And all trouble…

I Have Two Words For Werewolves:

My name is Hedi Peacock and I have a secret. I’m not human, and I have the pointy Fae ears and Were inner-bitch to prove it. As fairy tales go, my childhood was damn near perfect, all fur and magic until a werewolf killed my father and the Fae executed my mother. I’ve never forgiven either side. Especially Robson Trowbridge. He was a part-time werewolf, a full-time bastard, and the first and only boy I ever loved. That is, until he became the prime suspect in my father’s death…

Bite Me.

Today I’m a half-breed barista working at a fancy coffee house, living with my loopy Aunt Lou and a temperamental amulet named Merry, and wondering where in the world I’m going in life. A pretty normal existence, considering. But when a pack of Weres decides to kidnap my aunt and force me to steal another amulet, the only one who can help me is the last person I ever thought I’d turn to: Robson Trowbridge. And he’s as annoyingly beautiful as I remember. That’s the trouble with fate: Sometimes it barks. Other times it bites. And the rest of the time it just breaks your heart. Again…
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

In the never-ending saga that is my love-hate relationship with Robson Trowbridge, I, half-Were Hedi Peacock, have had a change of heart. Ever since I shoved Trowbridge through the Gates of Merenwyn, I’ve been the leader of the pack—hard to believe, right? The thing is: I’m half-Fae. So even though my Were side is ready to heed the call of the wild, the other part of me is desperate to take flight. And much as it pains me to admit it, life without Trowbridge is really starting to were me down…

I Am Were, Hear Me Roar.

To make matters worse, the wolves of Creemore want my blood—and the North American Council of Weres wants me dead. So I’m just counting the days until Trowbridge returns from the other realm…and comes to my brave rescue…and becomes my alpha mate. Wishful thinking? Of course it is. But given all the mess I’ve been through already, what’s the harm in doing a little bit of daisy-plucking? Besides, Trowbridge owes me bigtime. A girl can dream.
Release Date: 25 February 2014

Summary:

NEVER MAKE A PROMISE…

Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore and my gorgeous mate, tries to protect me, Hedi Peacock, half-Fae, half-were, from all the trouble I get into. The thing is, my past is pretty messy and bad guys keep knocking down my door. Witches, thug bikers, the North American Council of Weres, dark magic Fae, and even an evil wizard are all after me. The Old Mage is the only one I really care about: He has my dear twin brother captive on the other side of the Gates of Merenwyn—not cool. So my alpha love is helping me to keep my promise to free my brother…

YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO KEEP.

Unfortunately, everyone who helps me ends up in a heap of trouble too—including my Trowbridge. Now, I admit I’ve had my moments as a shivering coward, hoping he will come to my brave rescue. The whole Prince Charming thing is hard to shake. But these bad guys after me mean business and those damsel in distress days are over. You know that “last straw” metaphor? That was two straws ago. It’s now or never. Again…
WHY WHISTLE IN THE DARK…

There are very few days off when you’re on an epic quest. Believe me, I know. I’m Hedi Peacock—one half Fae, the other Were—and if being a half-breed with one foot in each world isn’t tough enough to manage, there are the four chambers of my heart to consider. The one who holds the strings? Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore. If I had my way, he and I would be locked in a bedroom, for eternity, but a pressing family matter needs my attention. It’s true what they say: A woman’s work is never done.

WHEN YOU CAN HOWL AT THE MOON?

My twin brother is being held captive by the Old Mage in another realm. Lo and behold, as soon as Trowbridge and I arrive in Merenwyn, we’re separated in spectacular, dramatic fashion—and I’m left to figure out how to maintain the fragile balance between my Fae magic and my wolf’s blood in a realm that cries to both. Not easy, particularly when I'm keeping an iron-grip on my temper so as not to dispatch with extreme prejudice the odd wizard or smart-mouthed mutt servant who crosses my path. My mama never told me there’d be days like these, but I’m not going down without a fight…or my mate.

My Thoughts:

The Mystwalker series circles around Hedi Peacock, aka Helen Stronghold. She's half Fae and half Were, although she uses her Fae more often than she uses her Were. We first meet Hedi in a coffee shop, and we learn that she had a great childhood up until here parents were murdered and her twin brother was abducted by the Fae. And we learn that Hedi blames all of this on no other bu Robson Trowbridge, the man that she had a childhood crush on, and the man that visited her house shortly after her parents' murder, but did not save Hedi.

This series follows along Hedi's attempts to find her brother, find out who murdered her parents, with the help of Merry, her amulet that holds a consciousness, and Trowbridge (and her childhood crush reappearing). Hedi and Trowbridge pair up and become a team in order to fix all that has happened due to what happened the night that the Treaty of Brelland and the Gates of Merenwyn were breached.

I have to admit, this most recent time that I read this series was actually the second read through if it. And we all know what happens when you read something over; you begin to notice those things that aren't actually so great about the book. It's what happened when I reread Twilight, and the same thing happened when I reread this series (though nothing was as bad as it was in Twilight).

I have to say that I really enjoyed Leigh Evans' world building. Although I've never been to Canada or Creemore, I felt that I could actually see everything that was happening around Hedi. That right there is an excellent point in the nod of storytelling. I could just imagine the Stronghold pond and the pirate rock that Hedi and Lexi had spent their time on as children.

I loved Trowbridge's character. He began as a drunkard who was doing nothing but feeling sorry for himself because of the tragedy that befell him 10 years prior. I could see him as Hedi had remembered him in her girlish crush and childhood dreams, and I couldn't help but feel pity for him. But then, as the series progressed, he became a stronger man and he completely redeemed himself in my eyes (and probably in the eyes of Hedi, in the end). Hedi, though, was a tad annoying, what with her little bit of multiple personalities (Hedi, the Fae, and the Wolf), and her not accepting herself until nearly the end of the last book. She wasn't really the kick-ass heroine that I had sought for when I first began the series, and I am a little disappointed at that.

This series kept me hung on every word and every book that followed, and I couldn't help but keep reading them (although I'm technically in the middle of another series). I couldn't put my kindle down, and even when it was about to die, I quickly found the charger and continued on reading.

But. (yes, there's a but in this) By the last book, as some ends were tied, others were left open. I understand that the author probably kept it open for the reader's interpretation, but it just kind of left me annoyed. Would Trowbridge and Hedi ever have children? What about the engagement? What will happen to Threall without any Mystwalkers to care for it? What about Anu? How are Anu and Lexi going to learn to tolerate and maybe even love each other? Also, Anu still doesn't know English, and neither do any of the other Raha'ells. And! What happened with the Great Council? Last we know, they told Hedi to close the Passage, but after she came back, there was no word on them.

Maybe all of this can be solved with a novella delving back into the world. Maybe it'll take several novels. Or maybe Evans will even make a spin off series about Lexi and Anu. Or maybe, the series isn't even finished, and everyone is jumping the gun, and there is more to come at some point in the future. I don't know, and I couldn't tell you what's the truth or what will come next, only that I wish some of the stuff in the end should have been tied in neater bows.

On account of that, I'm giving this series 3 hearts. If there was some novella attached that cleaned it up, it would have gotten 4.

And, drumroll, ladies and gents, here's an excerpt of The Dreamer:

Reaching out, I coax him to hand over whatever he’s concealing. He wears a playful smile that slips away when he sees my arm. Noticing that I’ve extended my bandaged wrist, I move it away, but Dev gingerly grabs my hand and brings it closer.

“No! I don’t think you should do that,” I say as he begins to unwrap the bandage, remembering what the doctor told me about exposing the burn too much. He holds me steady.

“Do you want this to heal?”

“What?”

“It’s a simple question. Do you want this to heal?” He nods to my bandage.

“Of course I do.” I frown. “I want nothing more than for it to heal so I don’t have to wear this stupid thing.”

As soon as I finish speaking, the coolness of his hands seep through the bandage and reaches my skin. The sensation startles me, and I try tugging my arm back, but Dev laces his long fingers with mine, holding me in place. After a beat he continues to unwrap the dressing, my newly exposed skin feeling sensitive in the fresh air.

My breath catches at what I’m pretty sure shouldn’t be there. The puffy, raw skin I was used to seeing circle my wrist is now nothing more than an ugly scab. How did it heal so fast? I slowly turn my hand over, lightly touching it to make sure it’s real.

“The mind is a powerful thing, Molly. Always remember that.”

He looks so much older in this moment…his eyes seem to hold centuries of secrets. I wonder what his age actually is. I thought he was just a few years older than myself, but now that I see his face smoothly lit by the night sky, empty of anything but a gentle expression, he possesses something ancient.

“What type of jewelry were you wearing?” He brings me back to the present by lightly stroking the sensitive part of my wrist.

I hold in a shiver. “Um, a charm bracelet. It was a gift for my birthday.”

He removes his hand. “Who gave it to you?”

I hesitate. Jared obviously gave it to me, but do I just say that? Then Dev will ask who Jared is, and for some reason I’m reluctant to admit what he might be to me.

I tuck my hair behind my ear. “A guy.”

Dev searches my eyes as I try to read how my answer might have affected him—deep down, I know I desperately want it to.

Dear Lord! What is wrong with me? This guy isn’t even real! And isn’t this the same man who made me furious earlier tonight?

“What do you do when you’re awake?”

“What?”

“What do you do when you’re not here? Do you have a job?”

“Uh, yes I have a job…” I hesitate, confused by the change of subject. “It’s all very boring though.”

He pushes me to explain, asking question after question about my mundane existence.

Slowly, his voice begins to fade and sound distant. I dig my fingers into the grass in an attempt to hold myself here, and Dev flashes me a sad smile.

“I’m waking up, aren’t I?”

“Yes.”

“But I wanted to ask you questions now.”

He reaches out, grazing my cheek with his hand. The sensation of his touch is barely there as my body has begun to recognize another surrounding. “There will be plenty of time for that.” His voice is buried under layers, and my heart trembles that there might not be. Will I dream of this again?

With that last thought, light fills my vision, and my eyes flutter open to early morning rays stretching into my window, laying their gentle warmth on my skin like a touch I long to remember.

Though non-fiction writing will forever be her first love, fiction has unexpectedly swooped in, hooked her by the soul, and become her true love. As a result of this coup d’état, Claire’s writing career has made a complete U-turn, and instead of rocks, plants, insects, and microbes, she is now putting human characters in the lead.

Claire’s previous jobs include working at a limestone quarry, hawking vegetables at a farmer’s market, clerking at the dollar store, and convincing new mothers that they need to renew their subscription to that parenting magazine in order for their child to survive. She lives in Pennsylvania with her amazingly awesome husband and son.

Release Date: 1st April 2015

Genre(s): Young Adult, Fantasy

Summary:

Raids splatter across the news–Arcaian soldiers are stealing magic left and right, using it against the people they steal it from.

When sixteen-year-old Ambry Csille’s brother gets taken in one of these raids, her utter fear and panic should be enough to invoke tears in any normal world. But for Ambry, tears are a thing of the past.

Because of a spell, people can no longer feel emotion; not enough to cry, and definitely not enough to defend themselves against the tyrannical soldiers stealing her people’s magic. A rare vial of enchanted tears chooses Ambry to reverse the spell, and soon she finds herself the target not only of the Arcaians, but of battle-scarred Talon Haraway, who wants the tears for his own reasons.

All Ambry wants is to rescue her brother, but when her tears get stolen, Ambry determines to work with Talon to get them back. Any day the Arcaians could drink her tears. Any day they’ll succeed at draining her people’s magic completely, and all hope will be gone—not only for her brother, but for her world.

Anyone who has read my books knows I’m a big fan of inanimate objects becoming characters in a story. In PHOBIC it was Piper’s haunted house – a place that literally interacted with her and tried to control her. Piper’s house was ALIVE, and it would lock her in or trap her friends in the psychotic basement below. In fact, the house, in a sense, was the enemy of the story.

In SUCH A SECRET PLACE, the inanimate-object-as-a-character is Ambry’s vial of enchanted tears.

These tears are the most powerful ever shed. But they don’t just sit around in Ambry’s pocket. The tears hound her. They throw major tantrums, burning the hands of anyone else but Ambry who holds them. And if she doesn’t keep them constantly with her, they let her know just how they feel about it:

I hesitate. My hand lowers, the humming pounds harder, and I can swear the tears say my name, a sort of woozy voice in the form of a feeling piercing straight into my chest. When my fingers close over the warm jar, peace washes over me. The heaviness, the headache. Gone.

In a strange way Ambry becomes attached to the tears as well, feeling as protective of them as a mother would of her own child. When they’re stolen from her, she determines to get them back. The fact that they call to her comes in pretty handy, especially considering how so many people seem to be after them:

One hand on the open screen door, he speaks over his shoulder, not even bothering to face me. “I hope you know how to get home, because I don’t have time to take you there.”
He continues to ramble on, something about broken promises and the mess I’ve made, but the tears rasp a complaint against my spine, and I rotate.
“They’ve moved,” I say without thinking. “That way.”
“What?”
“The tears,” I say, pointing west into the navy blue sky. “They’re going that way now.”
Talon shuts the screen door and stares me down. His eyes are deeper in the darkness. “You’re telling me you can sense them?”
I gaze at the gumball moon, the valley of Waenton, the houses and sparse city lights in the distance. “Why aren’t they driving him crazy? They drove you crazy.”
“I don’t know. But you’re saying…” He puts a hand on my shoulder and turns me away from the hum, toward him. His eyes trap my gaze. “You’re saying you could lead me to them again?”
“You’re joking, right? You just made it pretty clear you can’t stand me. So no, I won’t. I’m going home.”
Except the tears nudge in my gut. Even though I want to, I can’t abandon them. I don’t understand it, but they need me.

So many great stories do this. Another inanimate object-as-a-character we all loved:
Wilson, from the movie Cast Away. When Tom Hanks gets stranded on that island for four long years, all he has for company are the packages from the flight that got stranded with him. We grow to really love Wilson.

Or how about The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? The pants don’t do anything but get worn and mailed between the four friends as they have their summer experiences, but they stand as something so much more than pants.

Any other stories you can think of that have objects as characters?

Excerpt

He made me feel like such a stupid little girl. He had no idea what it was like for me. None. I wanted to yell at him and slap him, but more than anything, I wanted him not to disapprove of me, and I couldn’t understand why. I’d never cared what anyone thought of me before. In fact, I’d gone out of my way to inspire less than comfortable thoughts in people. It was the way I operated. It was the way I’d survived the last few years in high school.

I realized with a start that I’d begun feeling comforted by his presence. We were building some form of quiet friendship. And the thought that he was disgusted with me caused shame to burn through my gut. But with that came anger. How dare he make me feel this way? Who was he to pass judgment on me? And pulling out what Abby would think had been such a low blow.

I was pacing back and forth, coming up with the words I would hurl at him to get even when I’d caught sight of him through the small kitchen window and stopped dead.

Tom was ripping his shirt off over his head. He flung it angrily, his bare chest heaving. Jesus, he was ripped. Picking the ax back up, ribs arching, he swung it over his head, bringing it down with such force that every muscle and sinew bulged and flexed with the power of it.

I sucked in air, realizing I’d been holding my breath. Emotion rolled off him, the air electrified. Wind I couldn’t feel tossed his hair. It was raw and almost painful to watch. He was part wild animal and part insanely beautiful human.

His body was a blur of motion, and he seemed oblivious to the icy air. A strong working body. A man’s body, not a boy’s. So much man. No muscle unused.

I’d been living with this huge, larger than life, virile male for almost two weeks.

Old fears skittered down my spine.

And then his chest wasn’t just heaving with breath, his whole body was shuddering and curling in on itself. His knees folded, hitting the ground so hard, I winced. His arms wrapped around his middle as if he was trying to hold his body together. It was at once both shockingly strange and also familiar. I knew the kind of feeling that made one’s body do that.

Pain.

The kind of pain that threatened to tear your soul in two.

Both mothers of two young children, both married to school teachers, and both lovers of writing, they have a lot in common. Having spent many vacations away together, they have become as close to sisters as two girls can get. It was on one of these holidays away that the Mica and Lexy Series was born.

Melissa is the author of multiple YA and NA books, written in a variety of genres. She is a fully trained elementary teacher, but is lucky enough to stay home and watch her kids grow. She is also spending every spare moment trying to turn writing into a full-time career … and loving the process. Find out more about her books here: http://www.melissapearlauthor.com/news.

Brenda was the one who encouraged Melissa to start writing in the first place. Once Melissa got started, Brenda caught the bug; she has been writing for ten years, in between motherhood and working at a local high school in the computer department. She has won two short story competitions and been runner up in another. Forbidden Territory is her first published novel.
Summary:

Jennifer Anne Davis’ best-selling True Reign series captivated readers from the very first page. Now, get ready to become entangled in the follow-up series, Reign of Secrets. In this new series, follow Allyssa, the daughter of the beloved Emperor Darmik and Empress Rema— and find out what happens after happily ever after.

Seventeen-year-old Allyssa appears to be the ideal princess of Emperion—she's beautiful, elegant, and refined. She is the darling of the kingdom and, one day, will be the most powerful ruler in the world. But for her, life at court is like a suffocating cage. During the day, she manages to keep a smile on her face and play the part of the perfect princess. But at night, she sneaks out of the castle and roams the streets with a commoner who doesn't know her true identity. She keeps tabs on the shady under dealings of the city and seeks out ways to help her people firsthand.

When a royal messenger arrives half dead, carrying news that an army from the northern front is amassing to destroy Emperion, Allyssa is forced to entertain an alliance with a handsome prince from a neighboring kingdom. She needs to marry him in order to secure his country's help to fight their mutual enemy. Prince Odar turns out to be rather charming, well spoken, and cultivated. In other words, he represents everything she despises about court life. To make matters worse, the prince insists that Jarvik— his nosy squire—watch Allyssa's every move, suffocating her even more. Jarvik is infuriating, bossy, and constantly looks down upon her.

When she sneaks out of the castle in disguise one evening, Allyssa comes face-to-face with an assassin who isn't from this part of the world, an assassin who was sent to murder the royal family. Stuck in an impossible bind, she allows Jarvik to help her. Together, the unlikely pair confronts the man sent to kill her so she can discover who's behind the lethal plot. Only, the more she learns, the more she understands that the invading army and the assassin are connected to an enemy she thought was long gone—an enemy with the power to destroy her family and the people of Emperion. The cage she so longs to break free from might just be the one thing she has to fight to keep intact. In order to save her kingdom, she has to sacrifice her freedom, her heart, and maybe even her life.

My Thoughts:

First: this book left me frustrated, and I hated that feeling as well as disliked this book. So, I'm going to leave you all with the disjointed thoughts of a review that I made on left on Goodreads shortly after reading this book.

Caution: Major spoilers ahead

Okay, I'm giving this 1.5 hearts, mostly because I finished this (1 star), and I thought part of this book was good.

I just don't see how they even started their relationship and all of the "I love you"s. I agree with Nathan: how did they fall in love with each other if they never even spoke outside of class??? It doesn't even make sense! That just makes it seem more and more like the clichéd student-teacher crush.

Next: okay, I get it, Gregory's marriage was a failure and ruined. BUT that didn't mean that he and Savannah should up and start an affair! There are options, and plenty of them. Hello, legal separation, DIVORCE? Him and Savannah didn't even discuss Gregory leaving his wife after. Savannah, how do you have any dignity sleeping with this dude (who, by the way, was gonna break up with you when you were having the relationship as a student), who is still married and willfully cheating on his wife. (Hmm, does this remind you of anyone yet? Perhaps, say, your mother? The one you refuse to talk to because she did the very same thing?) HE CHOSE HER OVER YOU, ANYWAY. He could've at least tried to find you after the school fiasco, but nope. Even after the Nathan announcement thing, he didn't go after you. And Gregory. Jeez. He had no personality other than only caring about his *so important* music. Oh, and being jealous whenever he thought Savannah was interacting in a boyfriendish manner with someone not him--which he had no right to, considering he was dating Karin, and then was MARRIED to her. Let's see... Nathan. I liked him, at least a little. He seemed like a good friend who only wanted the best for the dumba** Savannah (come on, if he were gay, don't you think he would've come out by now? SAVANNAH, THINK WITH THAT THING THAT YOUR SKULL PROTECTS.) Karin. I feel like the authors just threw in her lying about trying to get pregnant to make her seem like a bad guy, considering that her husband's all cheaty-cheaty. Karin, why the hell did you marry that douchecanoe anyway? Besides, she had more of a reason to be in love with him (considering they went on several dates and even probably had sex before Gregory and Savannah did [see: "Let's go back to my place?"] whilst he and Savannah only spoke in class). PSA: if you want to cheat, end the relationship you're currently in. Okay? Okay.

Finally, I really did not connect with the characters. I really, really hated them all. They reminded me of the characters from Wuthering Heights, while somehow being even worse. It's like the cliché, how you imagine the uppercrust in our society act on a normal basis. Breaking up because it'd ruin you, cheating on your spouse, unnecessary drama drama drama, wine.

Also: while I was reading this I had-- you know how when you feel like it's been hours and hours but when you finally look at the clock, it's only been ten minutes? Yeah, that's how it was reading this darned book. I was reading, realized it had been four hours, looked at the progress I made and saw that I was only 39% through! In comparison, I just finished a book that was almost twice as long in six hours.

Really, the only think I liked was the in depth-ness of the music stuff, and that the MC was a flutist (TEAM FLUTES). Either the authors did really good research on musical writing and theories, or they play instruments, too.

So, I do not recommend this book, and I'm so sorry for this Ms. Randall and Mr. Sheenan-Miles, but I probably won't read anything else from you guys. This kinda turned me off from your writing (at least for now).
Author: Riley Edgewood

Release Date: 23rd February 2015

Genre(s): New Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Summary:

She wants to forget he ever existed. He’d never give up her memory.

Quinn Westwood is completely over Sawyer Carson. He broke her heart years ago and disappeared from her life without a word. So yeah. She’s over him. Never even thinks of him. In fact, she’s spending her college summer break surfing and lifeguarding in the Outer Banks, while nursing a bruised heart from a different relationship gone wrong. She doesn’t have room in her mind or heart for Sawyer—until she runs into him at a beach bonfire and the sparks that fly between them are way hotter than the flames heating the sand.

Sawyer never got over Quinn. The only thing stronger than what he feels for her is the secret keeping them apart, but sharing it would destroy more than just his life—it’d ruin hers, as well. Still, he can’t seem to keep away from her, can’t seem to keep his hands off of her soft, tempting skin. Especially since she has even less self-control when it comes to reigniting the physical side of what made them perfect together.

But secrets have a way of slipping out, and when Sawyer’s is revealed it threatens to shatter everyone involved. He’ll have to face walking away a second time, and Quinn will have to decide if fighting for him is worth it when the fallout could affect more than just her heart, but also
those of the people she loves most.

Surf & Surrender is the second book in Riley Edgewood’s Summer Love series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel.
Genre(s): New Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction

Summary:

All that’s required to ignite a revolution is a single spark rising.

Two hundred years after the cataclysm that annihilated fossil fuels, Sparks keep electricity flowing through their control of energy-giving Dust. The Council of Nine rebuilt civilization on the backs of Sparks, offering citizens a comfortable life in a relo-city in exchange for power, particularly over the children able to fuel the future. The strongest of the boys are taken as Wards and raised to become elite agents, the Council’s enforcers and spies. Strong girls—those who could advance the rapidly-evolving matrilineal power—don’t exist. Not according to the Council.

Lena Gracey died as a child, mourned publicly by parents desperate to keep her from the Council. She was raised in hiding until she fled the relo-city for solitary freedom in the desert. Lena lives off the grid, selling her power on the black market.
Agent Alex Reyes was honed into a calculating weapon at the Ward School to do the Council’s dirty work. But Alex lives a double life. He’s leading the next generation of agents in a secret revolution to destroy those in power from within.
The life Lena built to escape her past ends the day Alex arrives looking for a renegade Spark.
Kate Corcino is a reformed shy girl who found her voice (and uses it…a lot). She believes in magic, coffee, Starburst candies, genre fiction, descriptive profanity, and cackling over wine with good friends. A recovering Dr. Pepper addict, she knows the only addiction worth feeding is the one that follows the “click-whooooosh” of a new story settling into her brain.

She also believes in the transformative power of screwing up and second chances. Cheers to works-in-progress of the literary and lifelong variety!

She is currently gearing up for publication of Ignition Point and Spark Rising , the first books in the Progenitor Saga, a near future dystopian adventure series with romantic elements, science, magic, and plenty of action.

My Thoughts:

Woo, finally a good book! (I've been on kind of a dry spell, and the last few books I read were not... great.) Maybe I should switch over to reading sci-fi for a while, since Contemporary romance isn't quite hitting it these days.

First things first: the world building. It was great, in this book. The world fleshed out, it made since, it wasn't too dark, and it was different. I mean, how many books can you name that is dystopian and the characters are dealing with the consequences that's actually a pretty big, controversial, subject today?

The characters: I liked Lena's character. She's that heroine that you want to be bffls with because she's always hilariously sarcastic and very independent. If I had known that the heroine was this kick-a, I would've read this a lot sooner than I did. Alex... eh, he was okay, but I don't know, there were some points of his personality that I could possibly do without. I do wish that some of the other, non-MC characters were fleshed out a little before their demises/exits because I didn't feel the connection to them that I should've been feeling.

The pacing and storyline: It was great. Not too fast, not too slow. Action at just the right place, with just the right amount of build up. This novel had me asking questions throughout, while receiving the answers as I read.

It really overjoyed me that this is a New Adult book. It seems to me that the genre is full of all of the same books, storylines, and characters: fighting (MMA and the like), rockstar, the shrinking violet, the damaged hero/heroine. It really annoys me sometimes that there isn't really a spectrum of New Adult books. BUT, I guess I just has to wait, if Spark Rising is an example of what to come. If anyone were to look at the NA category, there still wouldn't be many, if any, Sci-fi books, so I think this is a great entry into the genre.

I'm giving this book 5 (five) hearts because I absolutely loved it. I just wish that I didn't have to wait for the other books in the series.
Release Date: 10th Febraury 2015

Genre(s): Young Adult, Fantasy

Summary:

Sword shall guide the hands of men . . .

For over a thousand years the kingdom of Lardan has been at peace: isolated from the world, safe from the wars of its neighbors, slowly forgetting the wild and deadly magic of its origins. Now the deepest truths of the past and the darkest predictions for the future survive only in the verses of nursery rhymes.

For over a thousand years, some of Lardan’s fractious provinces have been biding their time.

Kyali Corwynall is the daughter of the Lord General, a child of one of the royal Houses, and the court’s only sword-wielding girl. She has known for all of her sixteen years what the future holds for her–politics and duty, the management of a House, and protecting her best friend, the princess and presumed heir to the throne. But one day an old nursery rhyme begins to come true, an ancient magic wakes, and the future changes for everyone. In the space of a single night her entire life unravels into violence and chaos. Now Kyali must find a way to master the magic her people have left behind, or watch her world–and her closest friends–fall to a war older than the kingdom itself.

Excerpt:

In the most surreal moment of my life, my mother, the woman who had just
folded my clothes into orderly bundles, told me, “I’m going into rehab.”

Resolution rested on every line of my mother’s profile. Rehab. The bricks in my
stomach lurched. This was my fault. Why hadn’t I been in Mom’s face as soon as I
started to notice her taking more and more pills? But I thought she knew what she was
doing. Christ, she was a nurse. How the hell had I missed the fact that she’d started
crossing the line? I felt dizzy, off balance, like someone held up my world and gave it a
snow globe shake.

“I’d drag you to my place,” Grace said. “But with my hours at the law firm and
Ian being on the road so much – you’d be alone most of the time anyway.”

I sucked back a snort. “I’m old enough to stay here and look after myself.”

Mom shook her head. “For a few days, sure. But not a month.”

“What if I stay with Roach?” The Jesus talk might send me over the edge, but it
had to be better than what Mom was suggesting.

“Not going to happen.” Mom put her hands on her hips. “The Dunmore’s would
ask questions, they’d judge. This is a family issue and I don’t want my life turned into a
sermon at their church, thank you very much.” Her eyes pleaded now. “It won’t be so
bad, you’ll see. Either you stay with your grandfather, or I don’t go.”

Emotional blackmail. Pure and simple.

But oh, so effective.

“I stay with him until you’re good to go?” I asked, accepting the fact that no other
alternative existed. Grace would end up divorce that much sooner if she took me in, and
mom didn’t want me at Roach’s, wouldn’t want to be in debt to the bible thumpers, the
self-righteous.

And so I moved in with Monty.

He wouldn’t let me call him Grandpa.

Author: Karen Anne

Release Date: 13th February 2015

Genre(s): New Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Summary:

The night Brittany Wakefield kissed her best friend, Jaime, she lost everything. Who knew one amazing moment could send him running— spinning a web of deceit and avoidance for two years. Stepping onto campus, she’s ready to win him back, even if it involves pledging a sorority she has no interest in.

Erik Draxton fell hard for Brit the moment she walked into the art room. With vibrant purple hair, music in her veins and a rebellious flair, she’s all he’s ever wanted.

While Jaime shrouds himself in secrets, Brit finds herself longing even more to be a part of his world. Unable to watch the girl of his dreams get tossed to the side, Erik decides to take matters into his own hands. But when Erik crosses a line, Brit feels backed into a corner, and discovering Jaime’s secret leaves her devastated.

With a shattered heart from Jaime, and the risk of losing Erik on the horizon, she knows one thing: navigating the social circles can be a suicide mission.
