 Tragic

Author: J.A. Huss

Publisher:

Release Date: May 20, 2013

Summary:

Rook Walsh is TRAGIC

Because life so far – just sucks.  Some girls get parents.  Rook got the foster care system.  Some girls get Prince Charming.  Rook got an abusive frog.  Some girls get lucky…

Rook got a second chance.

And she took it.  Because when fate throws you a bone – you grab it with both hands and run.

Antoine Chaput knows the minute he spies Rook in his photography studio that she’s got The Look.  The dark and desperate look he must have to land the exclusive TRAGIC media contract.

Rook is paired up with top model, Ronin, and he’s everything her abusive ex-boyfriend wasn’t. Patient, gentle, happy, attentive, and sexy!  He knows exactly what to do to make Rook blush for Antoine’s portfolio.

Rook’s luck changes in an instant and suddenly she’s the darling of the modeling world.  It’s a dream job to go with a dream guy and all she has to do is look pretty and follow directions. But there’s always a price to pay – and Rook is about to get the bill.

TRAGIC is a new adult contemporary romance. Recommended for ages 17+ because of mature content.

About the Author:
J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).
She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

My Thoughts:

OF COURSE it has to be a part of a series. Of course. You see, you guy, I promised myself that I wouldn't start a book that was a part of a series that I had to wait for. Especially good books, that I'd want to wait for (this stems from some serious series withdrawals). So, yeah, this book had to be one of those good ones that I have to wait for the next book for.

Well, anyway, I did like this book, as you can tell from my not-so-small rant above.

First of all, I like that Rook and Ronin POVs alternate for the chapters. Some of you who've read my other reviews probably know how I like my alternating POVs. Rook and Ronin's characters are completely different, too. I'm talking like polar opposites. So, that makes their whole romance all the more sweeter, to me at least.

What I really liked about this book, though, was that it took me by surprise. I mean, by reading the title and the first few sentences of the summary, you think "Oh, gosh, this is gonna be depressing, isn't it?" Yes, it does have a sad element to it (you can't get away from it with Rook's original circumstances), but it's more than that angst-type thing that I originally thought it would have.

Next on the list: the plot. Loved it at points, hated it at others, but what other good book doesn't make you feel that way? Sure, there are some books with the "make the loser feel better and more popular by making her a model" points in it (think Schuyler in the later books of the Blue Bloods series), but like I said before, this book has so much more.

Now, one thing that I didn't really like was how Rook and Ronin's relationship kind of went from 0 to 60 within a handful of chapters. It's one thing to model half naked in front of someone you don't know, but to sleep (just sleep) the same way is different.

Well, I'm giving this book 4.5 hearts, simply because of that one speed romance element.

With second chances, for me, it depends on the circumstance. Thanks for the giveaway :)
