Take a Bow

Author: Elizabeth Eulberg

Release Date: April 1, 2012

Publisher: Point

Summary (Goodreads):

From the fantastic author of The Lonely Hearts Club and Prom & Prejudice comes a story of all the drama and comedy of four friends who grow into themselves at a performing arts high school.
Emme, Sophie, Ethan, and Carter are seniors at a performing arts school, getting ready for their Senior Showcase recital, where the pressure is on to appeal to colleges, dance academies, and professionals in show business. For Sophie, a singer, it's been great to be friends with Emme, who composes songs for her, and to date Carter, soap opera heartthrob who gets plenty of press coverage. Emme and Ethan have been in a band together through all four years of school, but wonder if they could be more than just friends and bandmates. Carter has been acting since he was a baby, and isn't sure how to admit that he'd rather paint than perform. The Senior Showcase is going to make or break each of the four, in a funny, touching, spectacular finale that only Elizabeth Eulberg could perform.

My Thoughts:

The beginning of this book starts when they're about to audition to get into CPA (the high school they're trying to get into). This story is told in alternating points of view, much like From What I Remember. Right off the bat, you can gather from context clues that Sophie is using Emme and Carter to get ahead in life. It's not hard to turn her into the antagonist in this story. What you know from Carter is that her isn't sure if he really wants to act anymore. Emme has a struggle to use her talent at singing and Ethan is trying to get Emme to actually see him as more than a friend.

I definitely like how this changed points of view more often than From What I Remember. It gave more insight onto why this character did that and what that character thought at that time and place. I liked that all of the character's problems weren't directly related (mostly) to another of the other main character's problems. So, even though the problems didn't have anything to do with them, most Ethan, Emme and Carter helped each other out.

This story's romance didn't really even take up most of the story like a lot of stories do. It didn't choke me and make me automatically think "SAPPY!" (which I absolutely hate in a story). The romance was there, but like I said before, it didn't smother everything. It also helped that I'm pretty into music (Hey, I play the flute), so I understood any of the musical terms, and I appreciated a good book not about someone playing a violin, or something, and wanting to get out of it.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who liked "The Lonely Hearts Club", also by Elizabeth Eulberg. That how I found this book, and I thought that her writing in "The Lonely Hearts Club", and my opinion hasn't changed with reading this other book of hers.

Drum roll, please! This book gets five hearts.

Does it get better after the first few chapters? I stopped at around the point when Sophie was performing and the announcer said the composer of the song she sang was someone else (which is a grave mistake since Emme was the one who composed it).

Lovely review though :) Looks like I'll have to go try out The Lonely Hearts Club!

For me it did. So, if you're like me... "Yes, I promise it does."
